The Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy (Masen), an agency of the Government of Morocco, has selected a project led by the Saudi company ACWA Power, from which the Spanish companies TSK and Aries also form part, as the preferred bidder for the development of the first phase of the Ouarzazate CSP complex, in Morocco. In the group of companies involved in the project it can be found as EPC contractor (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) a 100% Spanish consortium formed by SENER, ACCIONA and TSK. The consortium will be responsible for the construction and commissioning of the plant.

The thermosolar resort will be located close to the city of Ouarzazate, at the gateway of the Sahara desert close to the Atlas Mountains. This place takes advantage of the magnificent solar and environmental conditions as remote location. The facility will have an installed capacity of 160MW and will involve an investment of more than 500 million Euros. The technology will consist on the trough collector system SENER trough©, and on energy storage system using molten salt to generate electricity in the absence of solar radiation. The core technology for the solar plant will be 100% Spanish.

The construction and commissioning of the plant will take place in 28 months. The EPC construction consortium experience in both thermosolar and electric generation facilities internationally, is a guarantee for the project success.

Being selected Preferred Bidder gives the bidder consortium the right to negotiate the plant funding with Masen and a group of international financial institutions led by the World Bank, which will provide most of the capital as debt. ACWA Power will manage the Project Finance after receiving the approval and power purchase commitment, at a fixed rate and for 25 years, by the Government of Morocco. This process is expected to last about five months, at the end of which the construction could begin.
